Why healthcare costs remain under pressure
Medical trend remains historically high, though there are signs of stabilisation in some markets. The underlying cost of delivering healthcare continues to face pressure from factors including advanced medical technologies and rising drug costs, while strain on public healthcare systems is increasing demand for private care. Wider economic and geopolitical uncertainty adds to a picture that varies significantly from market to market.
Alongside these wider cost pressures, our claims data shows changing patterns of healthcare use. Cancer and musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions remain significant drivers of claims costs, while out-patient care and prescription use account for a growing share of claims. We are seeing higher-frequency claims relating to diabetes, obesity, thyroid and cholesterol disorders.
